Obituary: Lady Diana Butler
She was a founding trustee and an inspiration for what is now Pestalozzi International.
In Loving Memory of Lady Diana Butler (1938–2025)
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Lady Diana Butler on 20 June 2025, aged 87. Lady Butler, wife of Sir Richard Butler, was a lifelong champion of education and a pioneering figure in early childhood learning, founding Knightsbridge Nursery School in South Kensington in 1989. Her passion for helping children flourish extended far beyond London. In 1995, she became a founding trustee of the Pestalozzi Overseas Children’s Trust UK, helping to create what would become Pestalozzi International.
Throughout nearly three decades of service, Lady Butler was at the heart of Pestalozzi International’s mission, helping guide and grow its impact in disadvantaged communities in Africa and Asia. She believed deeply in the abilities of young people, regardless of their backgrounds, and worked tirelessly to ensure that bright children from disadvantaged circumstances could access quality education and opportunities for growth. Even after stepping down from the board in January 2023, she stayed closely connected, taking a keen interest in the progress of Pestalozzi students and alumni around the world. Her visits to our programmes in India, Malawi, Nepal, Thailand and Zambia reflected this commitment, leaving lasting impressions on all she met.
Lady Butler’s legacy lives on in the lives of Pestalozzi alumni across the world who continue to reflect her values and vision. She is survived by her husband, Sir Richard Butler, their four children — Thomas, Patrick, Rupert and Anne — and by the global Pestalozzi community who will always honour her extraordinary contribution and remember her with deep gratitude.
At the request of Lady Butler’s family, donations in her memory may be made to Pestalozzi International.
